The NDIS Explained

The Australian Government’s National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), provides information and financial assistance to people living with a disability. The aim is to help all people with disabilities to connect with home and living and personal care supports and suitable services in their community, to enable them to acquire the skills and access the supports they require to live more independently and achieve their goals and objectives.

The NDIS works closely with the applicant, their carers, and service providers to establish the supports and services required by every Australian living with significant and permanent disability, and funding for these supports is made available to meet the individual needs of each person who participates in the scheme. One of these funded supports is Medium Term Accommodation, also known as Transitional Accommodation.

MTA Eligibility and Funding Explained

Medium Term Accommodation is a temporary housing option available to eligible NDIS participants who meet certain criteria. Funding for Medium Term Accommodation is only accessible to people who have had their place confirmed in a long-term housing solution but require temporary disability accommodation while they wait for their long-term accommodation solution to be ready. For example, for their confirmed place in Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) to become available, or for home modifications to be completed, or for assistive technologies to arrive and/or be installed.

The NDIS typically only funds Medium Term Accommodation as a ‘one-off’, for a single period of up to 90 days (three months). Funding may only be used to cover accommodation costs, exclusive of any additional personal care supports that may be required and day-to-day living costs such as groceries, utilities, phone and internet and so on.

Applying for NDIS MTA

In order to apply for NDIS funding to access Medium Term Accommodation, you must first be eligible to access the NDIS. Check the NDIS website for more information on eligibility requirements, including a Medium Term Accommodation Checklist, to help you establish whether you might be eligible to apply for and receive funding for Medium Term Accommodation, and assist you to prepare for a discussion with the NDIS about your current accommodation and support needs.

Once you have checked your eligibility and confirmed you meet the criteria for NDIS funding, you can apply for funding via an NDIS plan by completing the online NDIS Access Request Form, or by calling the NDIS. You can then discuss your eligibility for Medium Term Accommodation with your Support Coordinator, as part of the process of developing your NDIS plan.
