What is Short Term Accommodation?

Short Term Accommodation funding, provided by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), covers the costs of accessing alternative accommodation and support in situations where a person living with disability needs, or chooses, to live away from their usual home for short periods. For example, where respite care is needed, to give the person and/or their carers a break, where a person’s usual carers and support network are unavailable, or to allow the person to experience a different environment, pursue their goals, make new friends, and try new things.

NDIS Short Term Accommodation -

Eligibility and Funding for STA

Short Term Accommodation is available to participants, where the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) determines that the support is reasonable and necessary, and use of the support is related to the person’s disability support needs.

When deciding whether to include Short Term Accommodation funding in an NDIS participant’s plan, the NDIA will consider how much of the person’s regular support is provided by family or other informal supports, and whether Short Term Accommodation will enable the person to:

  • pursue their NDIS plan goals and increase their independence.
  • get involved in more activities, build their social skills, and participate in their community.
  • maintain their functional capacity, which may, in turn, enable family or informal supports to support the participant in their own home for longer.

The NDIS typically provides Short Term Accommodation funding for a period of up to 28 days per year. The recipient may use this funding to access care and accommodation (including meals and agreed activities) in whichever way best suits their needs – for example, for a block of up to 14 days, for one weekend a month, or for one week every three months.

It’s also important to note that, if you already have funding in your Core Supports budget it may not be necessary to make a specific application for Short Term Accommodation funding. Your Core budget can be used on a range of supports, to meet your needs, and can be used for Short Term Accommodation if you feel that this is one of the best ways to pursue your NDIS plan goals. Check the NDIS website for more information, or for help with understanding your NDIS plan. Alternatively, talk to your Support Coordinator, or request a plan reassessment/review if you need to access Short Term Accommodation but have insufficient funding in your plan.
